Meaning
Let someone be the son of Mary.
Let someone treat my sorrow.
Explanation/Comment:
Son of Mary means Jesus Christ. He was reputed to heal by just a touch.
Ghalib says so what someone was a Jesus and healed the sick? Could someone alleviate his sorrow today?
Just belief in a Jesus of the past would not relieve the sorrows of
the present unless some goal directed effort was put in as well. Moreover, there were many today who claimed to be like ‘Jesus’, i.e., having the power to heal. Ghalib would believe them only if they could relieve his sorrow today, not because of their claims.
Also, all those in power today – the modern ‘Jesuses’ – who claimed to work to relieve human suffering, and backed it up with facts and figures in newspapers and the electronic media – Ghalib would not believe their claims, but accept them only if they could relieve his personal misery.
There maybe great people claiming great powers and making great announcements. Believe only those who remove your individual sorrow.
