Meaning
Since the face lights up on seeing her/him
She/He thinks the patient is doing well.

Explanation:

When a loved one visits the sick, the patient’s face lights up temporarily. This may give a mistaken feeling that the patient is well. The joy is due to the loved one’s presence, not reflecting the patient’s actual condition. Care-givers need to especially bear this in mind.
Patients put up a brave face even before doctors. It doesn’t mean they are actually well.
All this is so because, even in sickness, we wear a mask to conceal our real state and project a ‘positive’ image.
Patients conceal their true feelings even when they are suicidal. That’s why it comes as a shock when someone overtly well and ‘brave’ makes such an attempt.
